Reports To: Program Director

Job Type: Full-Time

Shift: Monday to Friday, 8am to 4:30pm (schedule subject to change)

Job Summary:

The Medical Assistant / Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is responsible for facilitating clients’ self-administration of medications and supporting the medical care of patients receiving services from the Mobile MAT Services vehicle, at various locations. Working under the supervision of a licensed nurse or physician, the Medical Assistant / Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) ensures accurate medication self-administration, monitoring, and documentation. The role also involves supporting people in early recovery, many of whom may be withdrawing from substances of abuse or receiving medication-assisted treatment (MAT). The Medical Assistant / Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is an integral part of the interdisciplinary team who prioritizes client and mobile clinic safety. They will provide detox- and maintenance focused services related to the safe and appropriate administration of medical treatment (including medications) as prescribed by the provider. They are responsible for providing safe, effective and efficient implementation of direct care in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards of care. The Medical Assistant / Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) will assess patients, support clinical protocols and administer emergency medical care. The person will drive the vehicle, secure it for deployment, maintain inventory and return it from service locations.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee self-administration of prescribed medications (including MAT medications such as buprenorphine or naltrexone) according to licensed provider orders and agency protocols.
  • Accurately document medication self-administration, patient responses, and any side effects or refusals.
  • Monitor patients for withdrawal symptoms, medication side effects, medical complications, and promptly report findings to licensed staff.
  • Provide phlebotomy and Urine Toxicology services.
  • Comply with California DHCS regulations, Title 22, and CARF/Joint Commission standards as applicable.
  • Perform and document routine health monitoring (e.g., complete vital signs).
  • Support patients during detox and stabilization of MAT Services with compassionate, trauma-informed care.
  • Maintain accurate medical supply, including medication. Conduct shift-to-shift medication counts and ensure secure storage in compliance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Administer and dispense harm reduction supplies.
  • Participate in regular training on safe medication practices, MAT protocols, mobile medical, SUD services and emergency response procedures.
  • Collaborate with the clinical and counseling team to support integrated, holistic care for residents in recovery.
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance and uphold strict confidentiality standards.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patients' medical and personal information.
  • Respond to emergencies and initiate action as required.
  • Observation, documentation, and record keeping of client’s health status.
  • Be familiar with common MAT and detox assessments, CIWA and COWS.
  • Skilled in time management and crisis intervention.
  • Follows HIPAA standards/laws in all aspects of their duties.
  • Observes client self-administration of medications as prescribed.
  • Receives and presents change of shift report as assigned.
  • Adheres to medication management policies and procedures.
  • Notifies the Medical Director and Supervisor of any changes in behavior and/or condition.
  • Able to work within a frequently changing project scope while maintaining overall direction and structured priorities.
  • Ability to enter data into various electronic systems while maintaining the integrity and accuracy of the data.
  • Professionalism, punctuality, flexibility, and reliability are required.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Integrity to handle sensitive information in a confidential manner.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team and independently assume responsibility.
  • Proficient knowledge of chemical dependency and psychological disorders preferred.
  • Knowledge of detoxification protocol and related care including symptoms and medications preferred.
  • Cultural humility and responsiveness are demonstrated as an ability to work with a diverse population.
  • Drives mobile 30-foot mobile medical unit to specified locations.
  • Observe, record, and report to provider: patient condition or injury, treatment provided, and reactions to drugs or treatment. 
  • Performs first-aid and emergency diagnostic and treatment procedures such as airway management, and heart monitoring.
  • Operate EMT equipment including, but not limited to: blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, and external defibrillators. 
  • Administers drugs either orally and performs phlebotomy procedures under a provider’s direction.
  • Decontaminates vehicle interior after treatment of patients with infectious diseases, report cases to proper authorities.
  • Coordinates work with other team members or police or fire department staff.
  • Other duties assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Current Medical Assistant or Emergency Medication Technician certification in accordance with California regulations.
  • Prior experience working in a SUD or behavioral health facility strongly preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of SUD protocols, MAT, and common withdrawal symptoms is highly desirable.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification.
  • Ability to use an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system for documentation.
  • Compassionate, reliable, and able to maintain professional boundaries in a therapeutic setting.
  • Knowledge of general principles of medicine can be derived from an EMT or paramedic training program.
  • Must maintain calm in stressful and chaotic situations.
  • Postsecondary certificate (EMTs); Associate degree preferred. 
  • Medical Assistant or Emergency Medical Technician certification required.
  • Valid California Driver License; safe driving record.


Work Environment:

  • Mobile Medical Unit serving adults with substance use disorders.
  • May involve exposure to individuals in active withdrawal or psychological distress.
  • Must be able to function in a high energy environment with varying levels of noise and activity
  • Must be able to remain calm in emergencies and respond appropriately to medical situations.
  • Requires driving, standing, occasional lifting, and ability to perform duties on a flexible schedule.
