About the Department

UC Geosciences is a nationally recognized leader in integrative Earth science research and education, with faculty expertise spanning hydrogeology, geochemistry, paleontology, geomorphology, stratigraphy, tectonics, petrology, paleoecology, and environmental science. Our faculty have diverse, overlapping research and teaching interests and we have a supportive, collaborative culture among our faculty, students, and staff. Our graduate programs (M.S. and Ph.D.) are fully funded and emphasize original research, professional development, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Job Overview

The Department of Geosciences at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Hydrogeophysics, with an anticipated start date of Fall 2026.

This position will contribute to the department’s strengths in geophysical imaging and modeling of coupled biological, chemical, and physical processes in the shallow subsurface. The successful candidate will integrate hydrology, geophysics, and critical zone processes to address challenges related to water resources, sustainability, contaminant transport, and subsurface–biosphere interactions. The role is expected to enhance ongoing departmental research in hydrogeophysics, including areas such as field-based geophysical observations, computational modeling, and AI-driven analysis.

Essential Functions

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in hydrogeophysics and related fields (examples may include but are not limited to Field Hydrogeology, Near-Surface Geophysics, Machine Learning for Hydrogeophysical Systems).
  • Develop and maintain an externally funded research program in hydrogeophysics.
  • Conduct research using geophysical imaging and modeling to explore coupled biological, chemical, and physical processes in the shallow subsurface; and conduct research that aims to integrate hydrology, geophysics, and critical zone processes to address challenges related to water resources, sustainability, contaminant transport, and subsurface–biosphere interactions
  • Recruit and mentor both graduate and undergraduate students in cutting-edge research.
  • Support the department’s mission to provide hands-on, interdisciplinary training by supervising field-based courses and student research projects, and by developing new cross-listed courses for geoscience and related majors.
  • Serve on departmental, college, and university committees such as curriculum committees or faculty search committees.
  • Engage in professional service activities within the discipline such as serving as a peer reviewer for scholarly journals or participating in professional society committees.

Minimum Requirements

Prior to the effective appointment date, all of the following are required:

Ph.D. in Geosciences, Hydrogeology, or a closely related field

Two years of experience in hydrogeophysics that combines field-based geophysical observations, computational modeling, and AI-driven analysis.
